Antique French Red Velvet Benitier, collection Holy Water Font, French Stoup, Velvet Benitier, Large Benitier

Beautiful, large, antique French wood Benitier with a red velvet backing. There is a hook for hanging on the back. The font is a beautifully crafted shell. French Circa 1850-1900
As can be seen in the pictures, the velvet backing is intact and in fairly good condition for a crucifix of this age. Often the velvet is very worn. There is also some wear to the reverse. This is to be expected on an item of this age.
It was most likely produced shortly after the Immaculate Conception appeared to St Bernadette at Lourdes, after which, there was, a great deal of interest in Religion, in then mainly Catholic France.
