Oleg Casini was an iconic designer, born in Paris to an aristocratic Russian family with maternal roots in Italy. His mother, Countess Marguerite Cassini was the daughter of the Russian ambassador to the United States; her husband, Count Alexander Loiewski, was a Russian diplomat. The family fled the Russian Revolution, settling in Florence, Italy and adopting his mother's surname. Cassini's fashion career began in Florence, where his mother had established a fashion house that catered to American diplomats.
Oleg Cassini became an American citizen in 1941. He was hired by Paramount Pictures and went on to design costumes for stage, screen and television. His roster of clients included Gene Tierney, Audrey Hepburn, Shirley Temple, Anita Ekberg, Janet Leigh, Loretta Young, Rita Hayworth, Betty Grable, Joan Crawford, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Ursula Andress, Jayne Mansfield, Lana Turner, Sandra Dee, Suzy Parker, Gina Lollobrigida, Malin Åkerman, Carroll Baker, Faye Dunaway, Kim Basinger, Renée Zellweger and Taylor Swift.
He is best known, however, as the "Secretary of Style" for the White House, for First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy. Ushering in a new era of timeless simplicity, he became her exclusive couturier in 1961 and created what came to be known as the Jackie Look.
