40s collection /50s "New Look" Black Cartwheel Hat / Saks Fifth Ave. / Betty Davis

When Christian Dior introduced the New Look in 1947, the full skirt was the counter balance for these wide hats. They were called cartwheel hats and were usually constructed with straw and had a low crown. These hats also looked fabulous with long-line tight fitting suits or dresses.
This black straw hat typifies the New Look style. The slightly upturned rim is edged with black ruff
netting, and there is black grosgrain ribbon and bow at the base of the posterior crown. The original black straw hatpin has even survived! The hat is in excellent vintage collection condition; I do not detect any flaws.
